Let’s Fulfill Our Essence, Our Purpose

A thought crossed my mind the other day.  I wrote it down and I continue to think into it. I’ve begun to research it. I wonder just how accurate it might be. And here it is:  God is in our inner voice — inside, at our core. It’s our spirit, the universe or however you choose to name it – but the important thing is that it is a deep, true part of us. It has full knowledge of who we are, and it actually commissions our DNA to bring our essence, our purpose, into the world.

It’s just like a small plant that pokes its stem upward and unfurls its leaves above rich, dark soil to make itself known to the world, to be seen and admired. It stretches toward the sun, standing firm where it knows it belongs. That’s what it is commissioned by its DNA to do. As we listen to our still, small voice, it will also drive our true, inner self, out into the world where it belongs. Authentically. Majestically.

Unfortunately, most of us have become pretty skilled at ignoring this voice. We don’t trust it. We’re afraid of it. We turn up the TV to drown it out.  We distract ourselves.  Over time we become calloused to the voice and it becomes weaker and harder to hear. But it still whispers.

I think it’s time to learn to listen to that voice, our spirit. Court it, nurture it. Time and time again it pierces the crusted earth above us so that we can poke through and stand tall, assured in our being. . . our majestic being. But then we back away. We hunker down, complacent to once again sit just below the surface. Close enough to feel like we’re getting there,. . . almost ready, . . . but never quite stepping into our purpose, our essence, our reason for being.

The good news is that our inner voice is tenacious and will continue to whisper, to call, and maybe occasionally yell to get our attention once again. There’s always hope, always a way to move forward. My prayer for this week is that we will listen, that we will practice hearing even the faintest whisper of our spirit, and as we step above the earthen warmth of our comfort zone, that our essence will shine on those around us. My prayer is that light will reflect back to us our purpose fulfilled.
