Coming Soon—Reflections on Adult Literacy
I have a new book on the horizon: Reflections on Adult Literacy: Nineteen Stories to Inspire, Challenge, and Give You Something to Think About. If all goes as I hope, the book will be available late October. Even though it most directly speaks to people involved in adult literacy programs, I think—I hope—it will interest anyone with an interest in reading. Here is an excerpt from the introduction:
“Volunteer for literacy; the life you change may be your own,” stated the slogan for a 1980s volunteer recruitment campaign. I did volunteer, and it did change my life. It enriched it, informed it, and deepened my sense of community. It sent me on an adventure I never looked for; it gave me rewards I never expected. . . .
Reflections on Adult Literacy is personal. It’s a collection of essays and stories that highlight the knowledge I’ve gained over forty years of managing adult literacy programs as well as consulting on literacy projects. Some essays I scribbled out years ago, while others were recounted more recently. They link my experiences to insights that I hope will benefit you in your literacy work or other passions you may pursue. I’ve long wanted to share these hard-won insights, but they don’t lend themselves well to workshops or trainings or handouts. They’re best told as stories.”
Stories—Stories engage us. They stay with us. They teach us and inspire us. I’m thinking a lot about stories these days and look forward to writing them. Meanwhile, thank you for indulging me as I share my current project with you. I look forward to releasing my adult literacy stories for you, . . . soon.
