Start Before You Feel Ready

Have you heard that line before? Too often we keep waiting to get better, waiting for more direction, waiting for more clarity before we jump in and do something. In fact, some of us are still waiting while life is passing by. That’s not good. We need to go ahead and start . . . even if we don’t feel ready.

I got a glimpse of that the other night at a watercolor class with Wendy Kause. I’m new to this. When she taught us how to dry brush the mountains in our pictures, I practiced. And I practiced. And practiced. I wasn’t getting any better; I was growing frustrated. I decided I better just go for it, and I moved from my scratch paper to the painting. Surprisingly, the snow-capped hills began to take form. It looked good! (And then I got confident and distracted and botched it a bit—but that doesn’t detract from the fact that I learned to do it and I feel good about it.)

Now I have to ask, what else am I practicing and practicing and practicing and getting frustrated about? (I know the answer: there are several things, actually). But I’m taking this as a sign to stop practicing and move on to actually doing. I hope you’ll consider the same. Now is the time, right?

By the way, if you missed last week’s “Let’s Talk Fabulous Show” on which I was a panelist, you can watch it whenever you like at one of the following links. The topic was The Pivot Point: When Faith Meets Action. Gloria Grace Rand was a wonderful and inspiring host and made it so much fun. Check it out and let me know what inspired you the most.
